WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING YOUR LIFE ON?

What are you building your life on?

Recently, we’ve faced some heavy storms in the Western Cape.  Strong winds and relentless rain have caused heavy flooding and much damage to some areas.  As this happened it really just got me thinking about storms of a different kind.  By this I mean the problems, challenges and hardships we face in our everyday lives. It leads us to the question, “What are you building your life on?”

Matthew 7:24-27 says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

IS YOUR FOUNDATION TEMPORARY OR ETERNAL?

Whether we realise it or not we’re all building our lives on something.  It may be things like success, money, popularity or God.  Whichever way we’re either building on sand or rock.  Anything we build on other than God is temporary, can be destroyed or lost and will pass away.  By contrast, when you build your life on God you’re building something that can never be lost or destroyed.  It will never pass away because it is eternal!

Remember that as children of God, we need to ensure that we build our lives on God.  He is the only sure foundation.  Everything else is sinking sand.  When the storms of life come we will not be able to stand firm if we’ve built on sinking sand.

So how do we build our lives on the rock? We see clearly from the verse above that those who hear God’s word and put it into practice build their lives on the rock.  Essentially what this comes down to is reading the word of God, spending time in God’s presence, and obeying the word.  Remember that Lordship and obedience need to be hallmarks of our relationship with God.

The only way we will truly be able to stand firm in these last days is to make sure that we are building our lives on the rock.  What are you building your life on? Be sure to anchor your life firmly in Christ.
