As Christians, we go through seasons in our walk with the Lord. There are times of joy when everything just feels like it’s falling into place and we cruise along with ease. But then there are other times when we go through hardship and struggle and it feels like we’re just facing obstacle after obstacle. So what should we do when the storms of life come?
In 1 Samuel 30:1-31, we read about David and his men. They returned home to Ziklag to find that it had been raided by the Amalekites. The Amalekites had attacked and burned the entire village. Worse yet, the unthinkable had happened. All the people had been taken captive, including their wives and children! Can you imagine what David and his men must have felt in that moment? It must have been utterly devastating!
YOUR RESPONSE TO THE STORM COUNTS
It’s interesting to note the different responses to what happened. All the men were deeply distressed but David’s men were talking of stoning him. Yet David had a different response.
1 Samuel 30:6 says, “But David found strength in the Lord his God”.
He turned to the Lord and asked Him if they should pursue the Amalekites. When God said they should David immediately rallied his men and they pursued the Amalekites and ultimately came through with great victory. They were able to reclaim their wives, children and a large amount of loot.
When the storms of life come and we face crisis after crisis and obstacle after obstacle we have to choose (like David did) what our response will be. It can either sink us and cause us to become bitter and defeated OR it can cause us to turn towards God, seek our strength from Him and ultimately walk in victory!
When you find yourself in a season of hardship and struggle it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed and overrun with all that’s happening. Yet, it’s exactly at this critical point that we need to immediately turn to the Lord and position ourselves before Him with a heart of faith. When we do this we position ourselves for breakthrough and victory.
When the storms of life come as they surely will, will you allow them to defeat you or will you draw your strength from God and soar in victory?
