We live in a world now where many people want to live their own way. Instead of following God, they embrace lifestyles of sin. There’s been such a move away from the teachings of the Bible that many people may wonder, “So what’s the big deal with sin?” It’s a pertinent question and one we need to unpack.
THE FALL OF MAN
To understand the problem with sin we need to go back to the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis. When God created the world everything was perfect. (Genesis 1:1 ) He created Adam and Eve and they had a close relationship with God. (Genesis 3: 8a ). They lived in the Garden of Eden and had the freedom to eat fruit from any of the trees there except the one in the middle of the garden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If they ate the fruit from this tree, God said they would die. (Genesis 3:2-3) Adam and Eve chose to disobey God’s command. As a result, sin entered the world and each of us is born a sinner. (Genesis 3:6).
SPIRITUAL DEATH
At this point, you might be thinking that they didn’t die. Yes, it’s true that they didn’t die physically. However, it’s important to note that God was speaking here of spiritual death. They were separated from God both physically and spiritually when they chose to disobey and sin entered the world. They no longer had a relationship with God. It was broken.
(Genesis 3:24 “So He drove out the man, and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life”)
SIN SEPARATES US FROM GOD
Sin brings horrific, tragic consequences. You only have to look at the world around us to see the absolutely devastating and soul-destroying results of sin (John 10:10).
So what’s the big deal with sin? It separates us from this indescribable God who loves us with the most indescribable love. It builds a wall between us and God (Isaiah 59:2 )
Why does our sin separate us from God?
Because God is holy! (“Holy” means without sin. Absolutely pure and unblemished) (Revelation 4: 8b). And we can not have a relationship with Him until we repent of our sins. And according to the Bible, there is a price for sin – death.
BUT THANKS BE TO GOD THAT BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT LOVE FOR US HE DIDN’T LEAVE US TO FACE THE PENALTY OF SIN WHICH IS ETERNAL DEATH (HELL) (Romans 3:23).

What will YOU choose today? The Bible says that today is the day of salvation!
(Psalm 95:7-8 “Today, if only you would hear his voice, do not harden your hearts”)
The choice is eternal life (Heaven) found in Jesus Christ or eternal death (Hell). Choose to turn away from your sins (repent) and turn to Jesus and become born-again today. When you pray and receive God’s free gift of salvation by faith you are born again! You receive the Holy Spirit of God and He transforms you day by into a new creation! It’s the most important and best decision you will ever make.
